The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 He created man from a clot. 2 Read, and your Lord only is the Most Beneficent, 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). 8 Have you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents, 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Tell me, if he (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) is on the guidance (of Allah)? 11 Or enjoins piety? 12 Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back? 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! 18 No, indeed; do not obey him! Prostrate and come nearer (to Allah). ۩ 19
