The Embryo (Al-Alaq)

19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 Created man from a clot. 2 Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, 3 Who hath taught mankind by the pen 4 Has taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 What is your opinion – regarding him who forbids – 9 A slave (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) when he prays? 10 Have you considered if he were on the right way, 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead, 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him call his associates, 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
