The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
