He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 you attended to him, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and in awe [of God] 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 lofty and pure, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 olives, dates, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral. 42
