Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 So enter among My servants, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
