In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
O you (Prophet Muhammad) wrapped, 1 worship (God) for a few hours at night. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof, 3 Or increase a little upon it, and recite the Qur’an slowly in stages. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon you a Weighty Word. 5 Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. 6 Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business. 7 Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Lord of the eastern and western regions, with due sincerity. 8 Lord of the East and Lord of the West – there is no God except Him, therefore make Him your sole Trustee of affairs. 9 And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity). 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire 12 And food that chokes, and a painful punishment. 13 (They will come across all this) on the Day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble violently and the mountains shall crumble into heaps of scattered sand. 14 Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 Verily this is a reminder. So let him who desires take the way to his Lord. 19
