Nay; I swear by the moon, 32 And by the Night as it retreateth, 33 and the morning when it appears, 34 Verily it is one of the greatest woes. 35 a warning to mortal man 36 to everyone of you, whether he chooses to come forward or to hang back! 37 [On the Day of Judgment,] every human being will be held in pledge for whatever [evil] he has wrought 38 except the people of the right hand 39 who shall be in the Gardens, and shall ask 40 About the criminals, 41 “What took you into the hell?” 42 They will answer: "We did not fulfil our devotional obligations, 43 “Nor used to feed the needy.” 44 And we have been wading with the waders. 45 And we used to deny the Day of Recompense 46 until the inevitable event overtook us.” 47 So no intercession will avail them. 48 What is the matter with people that they are turning away from this Exhortation, 49 like startled wild donkeys 50 Fleeing away from a lion. 51 Rather each one of them desires that he should be given open Books. 52 Nay, but they do not [believe in and hence, do not] fear the life to come. 53 Nay, verily, this (Quran) is an admonition, 54 so whoever wills shall remember it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
