Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Have you heard about the Overwhelming Event? 1 On that Day faces shall be humbled, 2 toiling [under burdens of sin,] worn out [by fear,] 3 Scorched by burning fire, 4 Given water from the boiling spring to drink. 5 No food shall be theirs save bitter thorn, 6 which neither sustains, nor satisfy hunger. 7 [And] some faces will on that Day shine with bliss, 8 Well-pleased with their endeavour, 9 In a Garden on high, 10 wherein they will not hear any vain talk. 11 Therein will be a running spring, 12 In which are high thrones. 13 And cups set at hand. 14 And cushions set in rows, 15 and well spread carpets. 16 DO, THEN, they [who deny resurrection] never gaze at the clouds pregnant with water, [and observe] how they are created? 17 And at the sky - how it is raised? 18 And the mountains, how they were fixed; 19 And at the earth, how it is spread out? 20 So, [O Prophet] exhort them: your task is only to exhort, 21 You are not a watcher over them; 22 Save the one who turns away and disbelieves 23 Allah will punish them with the greatest punishment. 24 Lo! unto Us is their return 25 Then surely upon Us is the taking of their account. 26
