The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 in which you are now living 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
