The Night (Al-Layl)
21 verses, revealed in Mecca after The All High (Al-A'alaa) before Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
