Sad. I swear by the Quran, which is full of reminders of God, (that you are a Messenger). 1 No, the unbelievers exalt in their division. 2 How many ancient generations did We destroy? (On facing Our torment) they cried out for help, but it was too late for them to escape. 3 They are surprised that a warner should come to them from among themselves. They say, "This is a magician, a great liar. 4 Has he turned so many gods into one deity? This is indeed a strange thing!" 5 And the Council of them depart, saying 'Go! Be steadfast to your gods; this is a thing to be desired. 6 We heard not thereof in the later faith; this is naught but an invention. 7 Hath the reminder been unto him (alone) among us? Nay, but they are in doubt concerning My reminder; nay but they have not yet tasted My doom. 8 Or, are with them the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord, the Bestower? 9 Or [that] the dominion over the heavens and the earth and all that is between them is theirs? Why, then, let them try to ascend [to God-like power] by all [conceivable] means! 10 [But] there it is: any and all human beings, however [strongly] leagued together, are bound to suffer defeat [whenever they refuse to accept the truth]. 11 The people of Nuh and Ad, and Firon, the lord of spikes, rejected (apostles) before them. 12 And (the tribe of) Thamud, and the folk of Lot, and the dwellers in the wood: these were the factions. 13 None of them was such that it did not deny the Noble Messengers, therefore My punishment became inevitable. 14
