a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
