The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn, 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And children present [with him] 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he thought; 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
