Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Enter among My servants 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
