The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Star when it setteth, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which covers covered the lote-tree; 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
