In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 A half of it or a little less 3 Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. 4 We are about to cast upon you a weighty Word. 5 Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allah). 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 We have heavy fetters and a blazing Fire in store for them; 12 And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous. 13 On a day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains turn into dunes of flowing sand. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 How then, if ye disbelieve, shall ye escape, on a Day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 Whereby heaven shall be split, and its promise shall be performed. 18 This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! 19
