A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
