a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
