The Ad gave the lie to the Messengers. 123 Their brother Hud asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 124 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 125 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 126 I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 "And do you get for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will live therein for ever. 129 When you lay hands upon anyone, you do so as tyrants. 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 And fear Him Who hath aided you with that which ye know. 132 Hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 And orchards and springs. 134 indeed, I fear for you the torment of an awful day." 135 [But] they answered. "It is all one to us whether thou preachest [something new] or art not of those who [like to] preach. 136 This is but a custom of the ancients. 137 "And we will not be punished." 138 So they belied him, and We destroyed them. Verily! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 139 Verily your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 140
