The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
