The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 save those that pray 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
