The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
