The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
Allah Almighty has spoken the truth.
