The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
And by the sun and its brightness; 1 by the moon, which follows it, 2 The day when it reveals his radiance, 3 by the night, when it envelops it! 4 And the heaven and Him Who made it, 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 He has succeeded who purifies it, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 The people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed. 15
