The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it envelops; 1 And [by] the day when it appears 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
