The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 created man from a clot [of blood]. 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds, 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Seest thou one who forbids- 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 Or enjoins piety? 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Did he not know that God sees? 14 Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock, 15 By the lying, the sinful forelock. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We will now call the guards! 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
