Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the break of Day 1 and the ten nights! 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
