O Children of Israel: remember My favour wherewith I favoured you, and that verily I preferred you over the world. 47 Guard yourselves against the Day on which no soul shall in the least avail another, when neither intercession nor ransom shall be accepted from it nor shall help be given to it. 48 And when We delivered you from Firon's people, who subjected you to severe torment, killing your sons and sparing your women, and in this there was a great trial from your Lord. 49 And when We parted the sea for you, so We saved you and drowned the followers of Firon and you watched by. 50 We appointed for Moses forty nights, but in his absence you took the calf, thereby committing harm. 51 Then We forgave you after that so perhaps you would be grateful. 52 And when We gave Moosa the Book (Taurat / Torah) and the criterion to judge right from wrong, so that you may attain guidance. 53 And recall what time Musa said unto his people: my people! verily ye have wronged your souls by your taking the calf, wherefore repent unto your Maker, and slay yourselves: that were best for you with your Maker. Then He relented toward you; verily He! He is the Relentant, the Merciful 54 And when you said, 'Moses, we will not believe thee till we see God openly'; and the thunderbolt took you while you were beholding. 55 Then We raised you up after you were dead, that haply you should be thankful. 56 And made the cloud spread shade over you, and sent for you manna and quails that you may eat of the good things We have made for you. No harm was done to Us, they only harmed themselves. 57 And remember We said: "Enter this town, and eat of the plenty therein as ye wish; but enter the gate with humility, in posture and in words, and We shall forgive you your faults and increase (the portion of) those who do good." 58 But the transgressors perverted the words said to them entirely into a different thing. So We sent down upon the transgressors a severe torment from the sky: that was the punishment for the disobedience they were showing. 59
