The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 shun uncleanness; 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
