a large group of the earlier people 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
