The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
