The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn, 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
