۞ Surely We had bestowed wisdom upon Abraham even earlier, and We knew him well. 51 When he said to his father and his people: "What are these images, to which you are devoted?" 52 They said, "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said: 'Truly, you and your fathers are in clear error' 54 They said: Have you brought to us the truth, or are you one of the triflers? 55 He said: "Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth which He created and to that I bear witness before you. 56 Abraham said to himself, "By God! I will devise a plan against their idols when they are away." 57 He broke them all into pieces, except their great one so that they might return to it. 58 They asked (on return): "Who has done this to our gods? He is surely a mischief-monger." 59 'We have heard a young man called Abraham mention them' they replied. 60 They said: 'Then bring him here so that the people may see, so that they may bear witness' 61 They said: Is it thou who hast done this to our gods, O Abraham? 62 He replied, "I think the biggest among them has broken the smaller ones. Ask them if they are able to speak". 63 So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!" 64 Then crestfallen (they confessed): "Truly, as you know, they cannot speak." 65 He said, 'What, and do you serve, apart from God, that which profits you nothing; neither hurts you? 66 Shame on you and on whatever you worship instead of God. Can you not understand?" 67 They exclaimed: "Burn him, and [thereby] succour your gods, if you are going to do [anything]!" 68 We said: "O fire, become coolness and safety for Abraham." 69 And they intended for him harm, but We made them the greatest losers. 70 But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations. 71 And We bestowed upon him Ishaque (Isaac), and (a grandson) Ya'qub (Jacob). Each one We made righteous. 72 And We made them into leaders to guide people in accordance with Our command, and We inspired them to good works, and to establish Prayers and to give Zakah. They worshipped Us alone. 73 And unto Lot we gave judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him from the community that did abominations. Lo! they were folk of evil, lewd. 74 And We brought him in unto Our mercy. Lo! he was of the righteous. 75
