The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And rejects the best, 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None except the most wicked will enter it. 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
