A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
