Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the Clear Book 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
