The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 arise and warn, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 thy robes purify 4 shun uncleanness; 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 and who still desires more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
