He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 To him you attend; 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 In honored books, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 noble and purified. 16 Perish man! how ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From Nutfah (male and female semen drops) He created him, and then set him in due proportion; 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And thick gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 with darkness overspread: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
