The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 in which you are now living 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
