The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 an orphaned relative 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
