The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 And the earth and Him Who extended it, 6 And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds). 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). 14 And He fears not its consequence. 15
