The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 We shall facilitate the path to bliss 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
