Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
HA MIM. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
