The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
