Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
