Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 in which you are now living 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
