(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
