The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
