The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read, and your Lord only is the Most Beneficent, 3 Who taught (to write) with the pen 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 because he thinks himself self-sufficient: 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah) 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Did he not know that God sees? 14 Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,- 15 The lying, sinful forelock - 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. ۩ 19
