Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. 29
